Every week Roisin Peddle takes a look at ten stories making the headlines here at Studenty.me. One of the silliest ads around at the moment is the one where the skydive instructor tells his bewildered skydivers to pull on the sheep clock which release their rubber duck and he’ll see them on the cupcake. In this spirit, I present a wide, diverse and even disparate group of articles for your edification this Sunday. (Can they tell I’ve ran out of ideas yet? Well, not if you don’t tell them- Ed). 1. [...]
Studenty Sunday: Book-Learnin’ Edition
Every week Roisin Peddle takes a look at the stories that made the headlines here at Studenty.me this week… We put on our mortar-boards here at Studenty Towers this week, which means only one thing… It’s coming towards the end of another academic year and all that much nearer exams. Here are ten to make you laugh and think this Sunday. 1. Speaking of exams, they can’t be avoided. (Unless you’re an Arts student, boom boom). Jane Kearns arms you with the A to Z of exams. 2. Ever get [...]
Future of USI fee campaign questioned
The Union of Students in Ireland recently held its annual congress in Ballinasloe, Co. Galway from the 2nd to the 5th of April. Congress, where delegates elect the next year’s national officer board and debate on motions and policy for the upcoming three years, is the main decision-making event of the USI’s calendar year. One of the most contentious debates of the Congress was on the proposed preferendum to change the USI’s stance on third level education.
Ireland’s drinking culture: Time for a change?
Yesterday was Good Friday, one of the two days of the year that the pubs in Ireland are shut. Regardless of the fact that you can drink the other 363 days of the year, some see this as an absolute disaster. I watched a TV3 news report on all the places where you can still get a drink- trains, boats with passenger licences. Do we really need to find loopholes? Can we not go one day without buying drink? On Thursday outside the coroner’s court in Cork, two heartbroken parents [...]
Seven dead in Oikos University shooting
At 10.30a.m. yesterday (2 April) morning, a man opened fire at Oikos University, killing seven people and wounding three others, according to police reports. Survivors tell how the man, who is described as Korean and in his 40s by witnesses, is thought to be a former nursing student of the college. Accounts tell of how he stood up in a nursing class, aimed his gun at one student in particular and began to fire around 30 shots. The Californian police arrested a suspect at a shopping centre situated around 8km [...]
Studenty Sunday: ALL THE THINGS Edition
Every week Roisin Peddle takes a look at the top ten stories making the headlines at Studenty.me through the week. My limited imagination struggled with a title for this week’s Studenty Sunday, which covers stories ranging from chuggers in Dublin to kidnapping in Darfur. Well, as someone once said, “The easiest way to become popular is to leech off the popularity of others.” In that spirit, I present a meme-inspired Studenty Sunday! 1. *Sucess baby* 2012 looks to be another great year for gaming, and Darran Goggin previews five games [...]
Studenty Sunday: Life Lessons Edition
Every Sunday Roisin Peddle takes a look at the top ten stories that made the headlines this week on Studenty. 2012 might be ancient at this stage but it doesn’t mean that we here in Studenty have forgotten about New Year self-improvement. Among our top ten stories are nuggets of golden, crispy wisdom… 1. The actress Maria Doyle Kennedy and Kevin Kennedy recently played a gig in Kinsale. Tom McCarthy found it an almost religious experience… 2. Ireland lost one of its most impassioned campaigners recently with the death of [...]
Your Problems Solved by Sorcha Ni Shuilleabhain Age 9
Dear Sorcha, I have no one else to turn to and I hear you are the best. I’m having serious problems in the bedroom and I need your help. My problem is quite embarrassing, so please be kind. Basically, when I get into bed beside my boyfriend I always need to fart just before I go to sleep. I’ve tried everything to stop the problem, like avoiding vegetables and bran before I hit the sack and spending ages on the toilet, trying to empty the bay doors, but no matter [...]
Two shot dead at Virginia Tech
A gunman remains at large after a shooting at Virginia Tech University, which left a police officer and one other person dead. The suspect shot a university police officer during a routine traffic stop on-campus. He then fled on foot through a parking lot where a second victim was found. The university is on lockdown as the search for the shooter continues and news footage shows heavily armed police entering the campus. A description of the potential shooter has been released. It is believed that they were wearing a maroon [...]
Cap on student numbers is proposed
The Higher Education Authority believes it will be necessary for third-level institutions to put a cap on student numbers. There is a growing fear within the HEA that colleges will simply not have the necessary funds to continue viably if numbers continue to rise. Under the proposed system, each university would be given a maximum number of students and then receive a matching budget. This would put drastic pressure on Leaving Cert students as CAO points would rocket, with more and more students attempt to fill course places. With pressure on Leaving [...]
