The Union of Students in Ireland recently held its annual congress in Ballinasloe, Co. Galway from the 2nd to the 5th of April. Congress, where delegates elect the next year’s national officer board and debate on motions and policy for the upcoming three years, is the main decision-making event of the USI’s calendar year. One of the most contentious debates of the Congress was on the proposed preferendum to change the USI’s stance on third level education.
RAs – Please handle with care
Residential Assistants (RAs): they’re not really people are they? Legend has it that they arose in the Land of No Craic; a morbid place where everyone cuddles up in bed as the sun sets, where the only thing less common than alcohol is a smile, and where loud music has been banned since Mozart started getting rowdy. The RAs were so good at having no craic that they were sent forth to spread their creed throughout the campus residences. They have a personal vendetta against you, they want to make [...]
Irish Universities fail to make Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings
No Irish university has succeeded in making the Top 100 in the prestigous Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings, which was published this morning. The esteemed poll is compiled annually by over 17,000 academics from 149 countries. 19 nations worldwide were represented in this year’s poll with the US claiming 44 of the desirable spots. Harvard University claims the number one spot while Massachusetts Institute of Technology occupies the second. The United Kingdom’s University of Cambridge was deemed the third most reputable third level institution in the world. Universities from [...]
Members’ Disquiet About USI
The Students’ Unions of Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and University College Dublin (UCD) may be leaving the Union of Students in Ireland (USI). Both Unions are reported to have become dissatisfied with both the efforts of the USI in the campaign against fees and the costs of USI membership. The TCDSU president Ryan Bartlett is seeking a referendum on the Union’s affiliation with the USI. Bartlett’s main issues are planning and co-ordination of the ‘Stop Fees, Save the Grant’ campaign last year. He said “The national protest didn’t receive enough [...]
Ireland’s Bid for Green Finance Boosted by New MSc
A new MSc course in energy and environmental finance has been launched at UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School. This new course has been developed in an attempt to help Ireland become a greener country for business. The course will begin in September of this year and it will take in various graduates of finance, economics, engineering, environmental science and mathematics. The course aims to provide students with a detailed understanding of the financial processes associated with the energy and environmental markets sector, and a knowledge of the skills that [...]
LGBT protest a lead balloon
“Make Some Noise” was the slogan being toted around Leinster House this afternoon. Sure enough, as I rounded the corner of Kildare Street at 2:30, I could distinctly hear what would be described as “noise”. Drums, whistles, chants, bangs, cheers, whoops, I could hear them all, floating down the street through the afternoon city breeze. This is what it’s all about, I thought happily, LGBT students getting out from the Converse shops and Hollister outlets, and actually making a stand on something which matters to them: marriage equality. I have [...]
USI survey shows that 3 out of 4 students have had unprotected sex
A survey conducted by the Union of Students in Ireland (USI) and the Health Service Executive (HSE) has shown that 74% of students have had unprotected sex. Seven out of ten students that have had unprotected sex have also never been tested for an STI. Furthermore, 38% of the 1000 students surveyed said that they, or their partner have taken the morning after pill, which is now available over the counter at all pharmacies without prescription. USI President, Gary Redmond, commented on the finding and said that students are more [...]
UCD researchers say obesity is your mother’s fault
If you’re overweight and getting dog’s abuse from your parents, you now have the best come back ever. A study of three generations of nearly 700 Irish families, carried out by UCD, has found that children inherit their height from both parents, but inherit their weight via their mother’s genes. Researchers from UCD’s School of Public Health discovered that the BMI (body mass index) of children, mothers and maternal grandmothers was linked. No link was found between children, fathers and paternal grandparents. The nature or nature debate also plays a part in [...]
UCD redundancies row continues
Facebook was set alight tonight with the news that UCDSU President Pat De Brun is standing his ground on one of his biggest headaches all year: the sacking of two employees following the closure of the UCDSU Copy Bureau. For those of us who don’t know (ie. Those outside UCD) the Copy Bureau runs a photocopying service for students, and has been a staple of the UCD Students Union for many years. Unfortunately, it’s also been making a loss for many years – approximately 30,000 euro according to recent figures. [...]
UCD Law Ball – Successful ad campaign goes viral
The UCD Law Society have come up with a novel, and successful way to promote their upcoming Ball. The students, with the professional help of the creators of Marryokes.com, have created a promotional video which has achieved unprecedented success. Studenty talked to Ciara Hickey-Johnson about the advertising campaign, “The video is a promo for our ball and was intended to be played before lectures and to be circulated via social media sites. We recorded it last Tuesday in the UCD Law School at Roebuck Castle, and we got some of [...]
