DCU shall take over Aer TV.ie tomorrow as they attempt to host a 24 Hour Live Broadcast, at 8pm tomorrow evening. All shows to be aired throughout the marathon have been made by DCU students and will include DCU’s own Apprentice, Babestation and The Late Late Show. Last year the 24-Hour Broadcast raised over €2000, but this year’s team are planning to at least double that figure, all in aid of Temple Street Children’s Hospital. Throughout the broadcast there will be various ways to donate via text and the internet. Spar on [...]
Prime Time Investigates axed by RTÉ
RTÉ yeserday announced that the award-winning current affairs series Prime Time Investigates had been permanently axed. This news coincides with the resignation of the former Managing Director of News and Current Affairs, Ed Mulhall. Mr Mulhall had been with RTÉ since 1979 and held the position of Managing director from 1997. The axe of the popular show follows an investigation by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) into the Prime Time Investigates programme ‘A Mission to Prey’. Issues were highlighted in relation to the programme’s objectivity and fairness in the [...]
The Trouble with Netflix
Netflix the online movie and TV streaming service is now in the market for some 2 months. A lot of things were expected of it. Some even predicted the end of the high street video library. The truth seems to be far more prosaic. I’ve used this service from the outset. Yet at no time has the idea of canceling my video club membership crossed my mind. A common criticism of the service is that it’s content is low rent hokum with a generous lathering of pot boiler TV dramas [...]
The Forgotten Ones
We all have our favourite shows, films and actors. These are the ones that captivate both critics and audiences every week or every time a new film comes. They get press time, news coverage and receive acolade upon acolade. But what about those shows that we love, yet either viewer ratings are below par or the critics hate it and it never wins any awards? The same story goes for the actors. We all know those who are continually passed over for the more A-lister stars. Here is a snippet of a few [...]
Is Geordie Shore Shakespeare?
Last night, I sat down for the first time and feasted my eyes upon a full hour of “Geordie Shore”, the television series that one simply cannot escape – especially when one lives in a house full 0f 20 year old women. While I was expecting to be repulsed, annoyed, disgusted, bored and generally sad, I found myself instead feeling something else. Something strange. I realised that “Geordie Shore” is amazing. A quick synopsis for those not in the know: “Geordie Shore” is essentially pure unadulterated debauchery: a gang of [...]
‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ considers abortion
Motherhood might be on the cards for Buffy Summers; the eponymous heroine of the hugely successful TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. In what has been received as a controversial move, writers of the continuation comic book series have given the slayer a much bigger issue to tackle than getting blood stains out of her blouse. Airing from 1997-2003, we can certainly remember that Buffy (played by Ringer star Sarah Michelle Gellar) sure did have it tough. In the space of seven legendary seasons, Buffy was faced with killer-robot stepfathers, evil goddesses and [...]
Snooki & Jwoww to star in spin-off show
Nicole Polizzo and Jenny Farley better known as ‘Snooki’ and ‘Jwoww’ are to hit are screens in their own spin off reality show from Jersey Shore. The two girls have made a name for themselves for their partying ways since their debut back in December 2009 on MTV hit show. The ‘Guido’s and Guidette’s’ of Jersey Shore were first perceived as trashy and many complained that their habits gaev the Italian-American demographic a bad name. Today however, despite the fair share of critics, they have become loved by many for their antics [...]

A Savage look at Irish life
Following the return of the hit RTÉ series, ‘The Savage Eye’ over Christmas, we spoke to John Colleary about his part in the satirical sketch show and their hopes for the new season. Late February 2012 will see the return of Dave McSavage, John Colleary and their cohorts promising viewers more mock-umentary and a satirical perspective of Irish social life. While it seems impossible to think that we could see anything funnier than the sight of McSavage in a wig and dress or Colleary himself wearing a bird-cage on his [...]
