Procrastination: There is no escape

Procrastination: There is no escape

Last year, around this very time, a discovery was made by a friend of mine that I was sure would put an end to my hours of procrastination, and change the way I studied forever. It was called “Cold Turkey” and at the time, it was the most ingenious thing I had ever heard of. Cold Turkey is an app that blocks social media websites on your computer for a set amount of time. Since this original discovery, several other variations of such a programme have become available like SelfControl [...]

RAs – Please handle with care

RAs – Please handle with care

Residential Assistants (RAs): they’re not really people are they? Legend has it that they arose in the Land of No Craic; a morbid place where everyone cuddles up in bed as the sun sets, where the only thing less common than alcohol is a smile, and where loud music has been banned since Mozart started getting rowdy. The RAs were so good at having no craic that they were sent forth to spread their creed throughout the campus residences. They have a personal vendetta against you, they want to make [...]

The Liverpool Echo reports that their city is combating the surge in heel-related admissions to hospital by providing flip-flops to clubbers for the walk home.  The initiative is funded by Liverpool County Council, and will see city pastors handing out flip flops to many a damsel in distress around the city. To women, heels are a fundamental component to that all important clubbing outfit. They make us feel taller, sexier and the boys love them, isn’t that right lads? However, there is not a night that goes by in Dublin, [...]

Help! My Parents Are On Facebook

Help! My Parents Are On Facebook

I  love my parents. I love spending time with my parents. They gave me life, which was great, they make me food, which helps a lot and they’re freaking hilarious most of the time. But I’m a 20-year-old woman now (Girl? Woman? Hamster? I don’t know), out trying to make it on her own in the big city, getting into hilarious scrapes and generally doing the college thing. As you all know, “the college thing” is largely played out on the internet, where every aspect of our lives is laid [...]

You have to look professional. You need to be a businesswoman and a lady up for a great night out at the same time. Wear black and [...]

How to survive: The non-student friend

How to survive: The non-student friend

You got your results, happy out, just enough (or maybe more) to get you into college. Celebrations, planning and all-round excitement ensued. And there they were, the best friend, smiling through it all. This friend however wasn’t going to college, they were staying put while you spread your wings and moved on like a hungry cow to greener pastures. But what to do with this friend when, after a few months, when his or her initial excitement turns to the green-eyed monster or worse, to downright hatred of your student ways? There are two types [...]

The 12 Pubs of Christmas

The 12 Pubs of Christmas

It’s that time of year again, Christmas FM is on air and Dublin’s streets are lit up like a… well like a Christmas tree I suppose. The assignments for college are finally done and dusted and inevitably you’re going to want a release from those books and let’s face it, any excuse right? The 12 pubs of Christmas is a tradition as old as Christ himself. Legend has it the three wise men hit 12 taverns of Bethlehem on their way to see the newly born Jesus and with that [...]

It’s the thought that counts

It’s the thought that counts

We have all experienced politeness in our daily lives. A stranger holds the door open for us as we leave a building, a passer-by saying “God bless you”, as you sneeze, or even a simple thank you to the bus driver as you reach your destination. Yes, we all know about those acts of kindness. But what about the not-so-daily acts of generosity and thoughtfulness; do we ever stop to think about them? Or more importantly, do we ever consider who carries out these rare selfless acts? In modern society, [...]

How to survive: the housemate from hell.

How to survive: the housemate from hell.

First year is a time of new beginnings. We see things we never saw before – the grant, huge lecture halls, people casuallygetting sick on themselves in crowded rooms. All of these things are new, exciting and we just can’t wait to see more. For those who move away from home, first year means being thrown together with new people. For some, new housemates can become like a second family. For others, it can be a constant struggle to survive. There are a number of people out there who just weren’t built to live with others, [...]
