Real men do silage

Real men do silage

In Ireland, we boast the greatest and the best driven vehicles of immense power and prestige. These machines are often expensive and frequently very, very powerful. Their owners exude a slick, honey skinned ultra confidence.  Indeed it’s possible but by no means certain, while they may drink water like the rest of us, they piss charisma in liquid form. That is at least how they see themselves. Even if the rest of us see tools with fake tans driving Audis. Real men drive tractors, drink tea (pronounced ‘tae’) and ‘do’ [...]

Studenty Sunday: Random Edition

Studenty Sunday: Random Edition

Every week Roisin Peddle takes a look at ten stories making the headlines here at Studenty.me. One of the silliest ads around at the moment is the one where the skydive instructor tells his bewildered skydivers to pull on the sheep clock which release their rubber duck and he’ll see them on the cupcake. In this spirit, I present a wide, diverse and even disparate group of articles for your edification this Sunday. (Can they tell I’ve ran out of ideas yet? Well, not if you don’t tell them- Ed). 1. [...]

Studenty Sunday: Book-Learnin’ Edition

Here are ten to make you laugh and think this Sunday. 1. Speaking of exams, they can’t be avoided. (Unless you’re an Arts student, boom boom). Jane Kearns arms you with the A to Z of exams. 2. Ever get [...]

Why don’t they make them like they did in the 90′s?

Why don’t they make them like they did in the 90′s?

While watching Kevin and Perry Go Large I rediscovered my love for 90′s songs. The era produced some of the best dance tracks that have stood the test of time and gone on to become anthems. These anthems are still loved today and I have no doubt will be around for so much longer. I have decided to compile a list of songs that are some of my personal favorites from this era. These 90′s tracks also appeal to those music lovers whose genre of choice is not dance. I’ll start by [...]

5 soundtracks to your other life

5 soundtracks to your other life

The movies: oh they can take you anywhere. From the roar of the battle charge on Jerusalem at the close of the Third Crusade, through the dither and gloom of 19th century England, to the catastrophe of the not-so-distant post-apocalyptic future, movies present us with that other world; that world that’s just that little bit too big for us to be in, and therefore just big enough to enthrall. But we all know that we don’t just watch the movies. When we tuck ourselves back into our normal little beds [...]

Balcony TV: John Spillane

John Spillane, A Rock To Cling To “Everybody needs a rock to cling to,” croons John Spillane in his distinctive Cork tones. A song with John Spillane is like going into another, much nicer,  world for all too brief a time. A singer, songwriter, poet and dreamer, John weaves beautiful soundscapes for his listeners to escape into. A Rock To Cling To  is the title track of his seventh solo album. John is a passionate advocate of the Irish language, and he jokes that some people think that A Rock To Cling To [...]

DJs to watch in 2012

DJs to watch in 2012

We’re three months into 2012 so I’ve decided to compile a list of the DJs and producers who have caught my attention and warrant yours. Many of these music makers may be unknown to mainstream audiences but I feel they have an original sound that has not yet been tainted by the push toward conformity. They’re difficult to find thanks to David Guetta’s mainstream revolution. Maya Jane Coles had an unbelievable year in 2011, winning many awards and enjoying much success with her original tracks. She even showcased her remixing talents on other [...]

Balcony TV: The Mandolas

Balcony TV: The Mandolas

Mark Roche revisits Cork folk/pop foursome The Mandolas as they perform on Balcony TV in the heart of Cork City. With bouzoukis, mandolas, banjos, violas, mandolins and guitars galore, they are the sultans of string. If I told you to listen to a 4-piece boy band, you’d probably tell me to get lost (or worse), but this pop/folk group from Cork are certainly nothing like you would expect to hear on a regular circuit of the local scene. Originally formed under the Nelson Mandola moniker, the band,  a group of friends from Coláiste Stiofáin Naofa, have recently opted [...]
