Where Instagram becomes Instakidney and Farmville is Organville. Facebook’s new sharing option – organs

Forgive the rather lame title but I felt I had to go out on a limb on this one. Facebook, the social media behemoth, is grabbing the corporate responsibility bull by the horns. They have announced plans to allow members (who are approaching a formidable one billion in strength) in the United States and the UK to “share” their organ donation preference. Ireland nor many other countries will not immediately have access, but it is likely this unexpected feature will spread like Timeline. Mark Zuckerberg and Co. believe this move will encourage members to [...]

Ulster v Edinburgh It’s the business end of the rugby season and European rugby’s greatest prize is at stake as we reach the semi-final weekend. Two Irish provinces remain in the mix and the potential of an all Ireland final in Twickenham, on May 19th. The surprise semi final of Ulster v Edinburgh will take place on Saturday in Dublin’s Aviva Stadium and Ulster are slight favourites heading into the tie. Both teams were massive underdogs in their quarter finals, Edinburgh disposed of four time Heineken Cup winners, Toulouse in [...]

A short trip away: Inis Mhór

A short trip away: Inis Mhór

If you’re looking for a cheap break away with your friends during the summer and can’t afford a week pool-side somewhere exotic, the Aran Islands will provide a craic-filled adventure that won’t break the bank. Nikki went to visit the largest of the Islands, Inis Mhór, last week and despite a nauseous run-in with the Atlantic Ocean, it was a plain-sailing Oirish adventure, perfect for students on a budget. The trip to Inis Mhór worked out extremely cheap, and student-friendly. The ferry to the island, including a shuttle bus from [...]

Studenty Sunday: Random Edition

Studenty Sunday: Random Edition

Every week Roisin Peddle takes a look at ten stories making the headlines here at Studenty.me. One of the silliest ads around at the moment is the one where the skydive instructor tells his bewildered skydivers to pull on the sheep clock which release their rubber duck and he’ll see them on the cupcake. In this spirit, I present a wide, diverse and even disparate group of articles for your edification this Sunday. (Can they tell I’ve ran out of ideas yet? Well, not if you don’t tell them- Ed). 1. [...]

Ireland’s drinking culture: Time for a change?

Ireland’s drinking culture: Time for a change?

Yesterday was Good Friday, one of the two days of the year that the pubs in Ireland are shut. Regardless of the fact that you can drink the other 363 days of the year, some see this as an absolute disaster. I watched a TV3 news report on all the places where you can still get a drink- trains, boats with passenger licences. Do we really need to find loopholes? Can we not go one day without buying drink? On Thursday outside the coroner’s court in Cork, two heartbroken parents [...]

International students please

International students please

About 120 million years ago, as a result of those interesting tectonic plate movements we all became familiar with in first year geography, Ireland broke off from mainland Europe; our first statement of independence at all costs. Since that historic day, we have been an island. A wonderful community engaging in mild incest and generally oblivious to such things as croissants and mayonnaise until relatively recently; the Irish are a people apart. Unfortunately, this isolation is spelling bad news for our universities. The Higher Education Authority (HEA) has recently published [...]

Ireland, the land of the drunk?

Ireland, the land of the drunk?

St Patrick’s Day, the day when people of all nationalities flock to Ireland to celebrate the man himself and of course to drink with the Irish. Though it was for many I’m sure, a great day filled with great memories, it was unfortunately for others a day where some could not tell that one drink from the one that was one too many. St Patrick was not drinking a pint of beer when he banished those pesky snakes from Ireland, so why is it that many people drink like alcohol [...]
