Every week Roisin Peddle takes a look at ten stories making the headlines here at Studenty.me. One of the silliest ads around at the moment is the one where the skydive instructor tells his bewildered skydivers to pull on the sheep clock which release their rubber duck and he’ll see them on the cupcake. In this spirit, I present a wide, diverse and even disparate group of articles for your edification this Sunday. (Can they tell I’ve ran out of ideas yet? Well, not if you don’t tell them- Ed). 1. [...]
Studenty Sunday: Book-Learnin’ Edition
Every week Roisin Peddle takes a look at the stories that made the headlines here at Studenty.me this week… We put on our mortar-boards here at Studenty Towers this week, which means only one thing… It’s coming towards the end of another academic year and all that much nearer exams. Here are ten to make you laugh and think this Sunday. 1. Speaking of exams, they can’t be avoided. (Unless you’re an Arts student, boom boom). Jane Kearns arms you with the A to Z of exams. 2. Ever get [...]
What the hell is a ‘fiscal compact’?
Nearly two weeks ago, An Taoiseach Enda Kenny announced the date for the upcoming referendum on the EU fiscal compact treaty. It’ll be May 31, a Thursday, always an inconvenient day for students. It’s fair to say that most of the talk around the referendum is like double-dutch to those of us without degrees in economics. So what exactly are we voting on next month? What is a ‘fiscal compact’? Good question. The fiscal compact is basically a name for the treaty which was signed by all EU nations apart [...]
Studenty Sunday: ALL THE THINGS Edition
Every week Roisin Peddle takes a look at the top ten stories making the headlines at Studenty.me through the week. My limited imagination struggled with a title for this week’s Studenty Sunday, which covers stories ranging from chuggers in Dublin to kidnapping in Darfur. Well, as someone once said, “The easiest way to become popular is to leech off the popularity of others.” In that spirit, I present a meme-inspired Studenty Sunday! 1. *Sucess baby* 2012 looks to be another great year for gaming, and Darran Goggin previews five games [...]
Studenty Sunday: The Lurve Edition 12-2-12
Every week Roisin Peddle takes a look at the top ten stories making the headlines here at Studenty Towers. And what an eventful week it was: 1. There was once a time when devoted music fans rushed down to a dusty record store to get their paws on the latest vinyl album by the Cure. In the second part of a two-part interview (part one here) Garry Brooks talks to author Graham Jones about the death of the record shop. 2. Epilepsy is one of the most misunderstood conditions [...]
Tragedy at Egyptian Soccer Game: Over 70 Killed in Riots
At least 70 people have been killed in riots following a soccer match in the Egyptian city of Port Said. Fans of Al-Masri, who beat their rivals Al-Ahly 3-1, launched a pitch invasion amid a lax ssecurity presence. They are believed to have thrown missiles and chased players and officials from the field. There are reports that upwards of 1000 people could have been injured in the incident. Fans from both teams clashed after the initial invasion and they stormed the dressing rooms. The Egyptian deputy health minister, Hesham Sheiha, called it “the [...]
There’s A New Muppet In Town…
Can you tell her how to get, how to get to Sesame Street……. ? Miss Piggy was the wealthy Muppet on the iconic Street when most Western economies where thriving. Draped with pearls and glamorous outfits, Miss Piggy’s character portrayed the upper class of the muppet world. But with tough times ahead for America, and indeed the rest of the world, facing recession, the producers of Sesame Street have introduced Lily, the ‘Hungry Muppet’. The new character was introduced last weekend. Lily is pink and sports some very trendy pigtails a [...]
“Here Kitty, Kitty…” – Catwoman Appears in Court
The camera never lies. CCTV footage has captured a British politician’s wife, Christine Hemming, stealing a kitten from the home of her husband’s long-term lover. Hemming, who has five cats of her own (!!) says she has ‘no recollection‘ of taking the animal. She told jurors at the court case in Birmingham Crown Court that she “had no intention of stealing a cat – either before I went to the property, when I was at the property, when I left the property, and subsequently”. ”I didn’t know there was a cat [...]
Noah’s Capsule
After the devastating natural disasters that hit Japan in March, one Japanese company has come up with an invention that could potentially save thousands of lives. “Noah” named after Noah’s Ark is a floating yellow coloured capsule. Some say it looks like a giant tennis ball, I however think it looks like a Pokémon. The capsule is worth 300,000 japanese Yen and it is large enough to fit four people….and the peeps went marching two by two hoorah, hoorah. Engineering company Cosmo says Noah is made from “enhanced fibreglass and could [...]
Indian Anti-Corruption Protestors Led By 21st Century Gandhi
If you haven’t heard the name Anna Hazare before, don’t worry, you’ll be hearing it more often in future. Once an Indian Army soldier, then a hugely effective local community leader, Anna Hazare is living proof that, with determination, you can change the world. Following Hazare’s anti-corruption hunger strike in April, the Indian government agreed to draft the Citizen’s Ombudsman’s Bill, adopting 34 of Hazare’s40 anti-corruption measures. Critically the government excluded the Prime Minister and senior judges from the bill’s scrutiny, as well as MP’s facing bribery allegations, so Hazare [...]
