It is the news that is said to shake the music world: lead singer of Lost Prophets, Ian Watkins, has been charged for sexual offences against an under-age 13-year-old female.
How blurred is the line between fantasy and reality?
We sometimes find ourselves cheering for the villain in movies, admiring their badass schemes and manipulative ways, then all respect is lost when they decide to take a break, mid-fight, to recount their life story and reveal their wicked plans. The good guys deliver the final blow, and we celebrate good triumphing over evil once again. But what happens when admiration of baddies turns into emulation of their dark deeds?
Original Travolta Masseur Drops Legal Case
Last week, Hollywood was hit with yet another scandal. Actor John Travolta had been accused of sexual harassment by a male masseur, and the plaintiff was looking for $2 million in damages. Since then, three more male masseurs have come forward with similar claims. Today it was revealed that the original accuser, only referred to as John Doe, was dropping the lawsuit. The initial claims by John Doe were highly graphic in detail and had entailed that the assault took place on January 16. He later released a statement claiming [...]
Man sentenced to life in prison for murder of 3 members of Jennifer Hudson’s family
The former brother-in-law of actress-turned-singer, Jennifer Hudson, has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of the actress’ mother, brother and nephew. William Balfour, who was separated from Hudson’s sister, shot 57 year-old Darnell Donerson, 29 year-old Jason Hudson and seven-year-old Julian King at the Hudson family home on October 24, 2008. Jurors deliberated for three days before delivering the guilty verdict. The trial lasted three weeks, with prosecutors calling 83 witnesses to the stand, including Hudson herself. No DNA or finger print evidence directly linked Balfour to the [...]
Harry Redknapp cleared of tax evasion
Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp was cleared of tax evasion Wednesday, removing a key barrier to his chances of becoming the next coach of England’s national team, following Fabio Capello’s resignation. Redknapp was found not guilty on two counts of concealing US$295,000 of transfer bonuses in a Monaco bank account while in charge of Portsmouth. In a case that stemmed from a $13 million police inquiry into soccer corruption, former Portsmouth chairman Milan Mandaric also was found not guilty on two counts of cheating the public purse. Mandaric hugged Redknapp as [...]
John Terry stripped of England captaincy
John Terry has been stripped of the England captaincy after the FA took action over the Chelsea defender’s upcoming court case. Terry lost the armband for a second time after he was called in front of the FA board to be informed of the decision this morning. Thus far the FA has refused to comment on the situation. FA chairman David Bernstein contacted all members of the 12-strong FA board yesterday, to seek their views after the decision was made that the defender’s court case will not take place until [...]
Bye Bye Oxegen
Is it any wonder that “Poxegen” has been cancelled? Considering that last year there were 308 drug seizures, and 90 other arrests, it’s hardly surprising. Having ventured to this festival way back when from 2004-2006, I’m honestly shocked it’s lasted this long. Reasons: 1: Bad organisation! Campsites are SO far from the main arena that sometimes it just isn’t worth it. 2: Early closing: Music STOPS at 11. There is then pretty little to do other than stay in the filthy campsite. 3: Filthy: No bins were provided when I was [...]
Lots to Love but little to hate about Love/Hate
Once upon a time, The Sopranos took us to the intensely dramatic world of New Jersey crime, with the backstabbing machinations of its characters constantly keeping it fresh. After its glorious eight year reign on television, we were left with a bittersweet taste in our mouths that Boardwalk Empire eventually quenched, 3 years later in 2010. Now, us Dubliners have our own blood-splattered serial of Mobster mayhem adorning our screens, and we can all rejoice in the name of a seriously compelling gangster drama called Love/Hate. With a delicate balance [...]
‘Til Death Do Us Part: Hacksaw Honey Out On Bail
Last Friday night, a 36-year old man woke up to find his wife trying to cut his head off with such a Sawzall, a hack saw usually used for cutting large pieces of wood or pipe. ‘Ouch’ is an understatement. Police officers arrived to a blood-stained scene, welcomed by the man screaming, “It was you…It was you…You tried to cut my head off” at his wife. The woman told police she was merely defending herself against an intruder who had broken in, and that he had escaped through the window [...]
Steals on wheels – Wheelchair crime
Robbers come in all shapes and sizes, some are old, others are young. But have you ever seen one in a wheelchair? I’m going to go out on a limb here (is that a tasteless joke?….na I don’t think so!) and say you haven’t . Well thanks to the wonderous technology that is CCTV we can now see the wheely escapades of Mr. David Knott. David was caught on CCTV stealing a television during the summer riots in London and has been jailed for a year. David (who had a [...]
