Holy Smokes: Price of cigarettes rises again, time to quit?

Holy Smokes: Price of cigarettes rises again, time to quit?

It has seduced and repelled us since the Neolithic period, adorned the lips of every golden age movie star, and burned a hole in our pockets as well as our lungs since it first came to ‘light’; yes, smoking is still as prevalent as ever. Even now that we know better, why do so many of us still do it? The sudden linkage between smoking and lung cancer, amongst other cancers and diseases, only came to prominence in the 1950′s. It was met with a lukewarm public incentive to quit, leaving behind generations of wheezy, [...]

Budget 2012: Day two

Budget 2012: Day two

Day two of Budget 2012 took the form of a more traditional budget announcement, with Minister for Finance, Michael Noonan outlining details of tax increases and new charges. Many of these tax increases and charges will have an affect on students and their families. One of the main tax hikes featured in this year’s budget is the government’s decision to increase VAT by 2% in 2012, instead of 1% in 2013 and 1% in 2014, as promised in the EU/IMF bailout deal. Wanted: A Chance to afford life – The inadequacies and frustrations of unemployment

It’s common knowledge that surviving off mammy and daddy post-18 raises a few judgmental eyebrows, so not only do we have the culture shock of college, but also the introduction of a workplace environment.  The whole aspect of entering a profession has always been universally daunting if not sometimes exciting, and commonly considered a starting point that most people dread. But not anymore. Replace the dread and uneasiness associated with that first day at work with intense relief and gratitude and that’s more likely what we’re all feeling. Obviously, that [...]

Supermarket Sweep; are you an Aldi or a Tesco head?

Every week there is the same battle. A battle that faces every student all over the country. Where to go to do the weekly shopping? With all the supermarkets competing for our money at least we have choice in the matter, and they all have good and bad points. Within walking distance of me I have Tesco, Superquinn, Adli and Centra. As I arrive to my student house on a Sunday I have to decide what is on my menu for the week, and after looking into my press I usually realise that I [...]

We shall not be moved

The tweets are coming in hard and fast as the Stop the Fees protest rolls through town. RTÉ is requesting photos from students out on the streets and the competition for the best banner is already underway. But what about the students who aren’t there? What about those of us who are sitting in the half empty lecture halls or deserted libraries? What’s keeping us in while so many are out and about? Emer Sugrue is in her final year of college. “I wouldn’t really have a problem with skipping lectures” [...]
