Your alcohol problems solved: By Sorcha Ni Shuilleabhain, age 9
Have you ever feared the damage your alcohol consumption is having on your appearance? Fear not: a new app launched by the “Drop a Glass Size” campaign has unveiled their latest project in the form of the “Drinking Mirror”.
Ever since my friends and I started college, we have openly joked about how we think our level of intelligence has deteriorated since we began Third Level education three years ago. Now, on a serious note of reflection, could this actually be true? Could college life be dumbing us down?
In response to the UK’s week dedicated to the issues surrounding alcohol abuse, a group in Ireland wants to emulate their campaign here in Ireland and have a similar Alcohol awareness week.
Drink, drink, drink, and wait for it…more drink. A night drinking loads of alcohol usually sums up a night out for most students. One individual alone could consume a bottle of wine, four cans of Bulmers and a nagin of vodka before midnight. When you see that written down, it doesn’t seem as harmless as it did while you were drinking it. Welcome to college: the land where binge drinking is not seen as a problem, but as a way of life. Falling down the stairs, getting sick outside a [...]
Coca-Cola and Pepsi contain traces of alcohol, scientific research just published in France has revealed. The revelation will cause consternation among those who chose the carbonated soft drink for religious, health or safety reasons. According to tests carried out by the Paris-based National Institute of Consumption (INC) more than half of colas on the market in the EU contain the traces of alcohol. These include the brand leaders Coca-Cola and Pepsi Cola, while it is mainly only cheap supermarket versions of the drink which are alcohol-free.
We’ve all been there – you know you have big plans in the morning: work, family event, a date. You know the last thing you need is a late night, especially one that involves the dreaded poison of alcohol. You know the right thing to do is to stay home in your jammies, with a mug of tea and a box set of Glee. But no. Peer pressure, guilt – trips from friends, or the irrational thought that ‘sure it’ll be grand, I’ll only have a couple of drinks’, convince [...]
Studenty’s Jack Squibb revisits the Hillsborough disaster on the 23rd anniversary when 96 Liverpool fans never came home.
Yesterday was Good Friday, one of the two days of the year that the pubs in Ireland are shut. Regardless of the fact that you can drink the other 363 days of the year, some see this as an absolute disaster. I watched a TV3 news report on all the places where you can still get a drink- trains, boats with passenger licences. Do we really need to find loopholes? Can we not go one day without buying drink? On Thursday outside the coroner’s court in Cork, two heartbroken parents [...]
St Patrick’s Day, the day when people of all nationalities flock to Ireland to celebrate the man himself and of course to drink with the Irish. Though it was for many I’m sure, a great day filled with great memories, it was unfortunately for others a day where some could not tell that one drink from the one that was one too many. St Patrick was not drinking a pint of beer when he banished those pesky snakes from Ireland, so why is it that many people drink like alcohol [...]
