In the last number of weeks, an unusual rumour has come to light. It is being speculated that Mars Ireland are to stop their production of yellow M&M’s.
It is difficult to see how M&M’s could continue to be so successful, at least in their advertising strategies, without the Yellow character. Along with Red, he is one of the most well-known icons for confectionary- at least in Ireland.
The rumours could be dismissed as just that, but upon further investigation it can be
accepted that they may, in fact, be true. Two months ago, statues of the yellow and red characters were stolen from on top of a bus shelter in Dublin which led to a campaign looking for information on their disappearance. The campaign is based on Facebook and twitter as #freeyellow.
A video was created by the company which suggests that unless Yellow is returned, that production of yellow M&M’s will be stopped.
Mars Ireland and M&M’s are declining to comment on the matter. Their Facebook and twitter pages are full of symbols which can be presumed to allude to the 8th August, and the phrase What is the truth? (or #witt) which leads to believe an announcement could be made then.
Despite the amount of speculation, it remains uncertain as to why Mars would pull yellow M&M’s from production. It is also uncertain as to whether the decision has been made worldwide or just by the Irish branch of the company.
As a fan of the M&M’s brand, I personally, would be quite disappointed to see the disappearance of Yellow- both the sweets and the character. What do you think?
