French runner Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad has caused public outrage after assaulting a 14-year-old mascot in an unprovoked outburst during the European Championships.
Mekhissi-Benabbad had just WON gold in the 3,000m steeplechase in Helsinki over the weekend when he inexplicably lashed out at the mascot called “Appy” — which just so happened to be a 14-year-old girl.
You would think that winning a gold medal at one of the most prestigious sporting events in the world would ensue nothing but joy, but despite this, Benabbad seemed far from happy.
As the 27-year-old steeplechaser crossed the finish line the girl was waiting with a gift bag to congratulate him.
But rather than greet her with excitement and gratitude, Benabbad knocked the bag out of the girl’s hand and shoved her backwards.
The footage is quickly becoming a viral sensation across the globe, and as many Youtube enthusiasts will tell you this is not the first time Mekhissi-Benabbad has become an internet hit for the wrong reasons.
Last year the 27-year old got into a fight with countryman Medhi Baala on the finish line of the 1500 meters at the Monaco Diamond League games that was caught on tape.
Look out guys, we’ve got a hardcore badass here!
