Thrift Now! – Students guide to buying on the cheap.

What do you think about when you picture a  charity shop? Stuffy? Old fashioned? Pointless even?  This may have been true once upon a time but certainly not today.  Their transformation infact sees them as the newest trend on the street.

Especially if you’re a broke, jobless student in search of awesomeness, charity shops will definitely fit your bill.  There is an obvious appeal of thrifting. But where does one Penney’s fanatic begin?  Following my essential thrift guide of course!

Thrift my way!

  • DO call often!

Unlike the identical railings of high street stores, charity shops supply new bits and bobs each day.  Awesome I know! However you may not find what you want all the time, but keep thinking of what gems tomorrow may bring.  Believe me finding a €200 warehouse jacket for a fiver is worth keeping the optimism alive!

  • DON’T expect organisation!

If you’re not aware already, charity shops tend to be a bit all over the place.  Most items are placed simply according to type or size. However lets treat this as a treasure hunt in TK Max rather than a jumble of mess!  If you’re impatient and want a cool find fast, check the new rail at the front of the shop.  Here I have often picked up incredible jewellery, books and designer labels for little to nothing.

  • DO bring a friend!

Sometimes charity rummaging may become tedious especially if you can’t make up your mind.  Getting a friend to tag along will make the chase more exciting!  I know they will offer ruthless advice, unbelievable finds and if nothing else a hand for all your stuff!

  • DON’T stick to your size!

If Murphy’s Law has anything to do with it, you will find the coolest top, two sizes too big! Don’t fret yet pet! Firstly, everyone has a nifty mum or aunt who can do a quick alteration. On the other hand who said tops and dresses can’t be worn oversized.  If it’s really getting on your nerves just belt it up and smile!

  • DO watch the window!

More often than not you see the best items on the window, but to nap these my friends, involve a bit of a planning!  If something catches your eye, ask in store for its size (if clothing) and when the Friday sale is on (Usually happens every second week).  Next make sure to arrive early on the day!

  • DON’T forget!

Remember that amid gathering up some stylish pieces for little to nothing you are supporting charities.  You are helping others out even with your purchase of .50c! So embrace the karma and feel happy about buying the rails out.

Picked up anything nice yourself in a charity shop? Let us know!
