Two men arrested in connection with the death of Irish student Nicola Furlong in Japan

Two American men have been arrested in Japan, over the death of  Irish student Nicola Furlong.

The 21-year-old DCU student was reported to have been found dead in a hotel room in Tokyo on Thursday morning.

It has been reported locally in Japan that Nicola and a female friend accompanied two American men back to their hotel after missing the last train home on Wednesday night.

All four are believed to have returned to the hotel where they had a drink in the bar.

At around 4am, staff were informed that Ms Furlong was experiencing medical difficulties and she was rushed to hospital, where she later died.

The result of her post mortem examination are not due to be released until Monday, however it is understood that she had been strangled to death.

Japanese police have also spoken with Ms Furlong’s female friend. The police have been unavailable for comment.

Nicola had been staying in Japan since October as part of a student-exchange programme from DCU, where she is studying International Business and Languages.
