Marvel has given us superheroes like Spider-man, The Hulk, Iron Man and collectively The Avengers, so where does an Irish female Marvel superhero called ‘Shamrock’ from Dunshaughlin fit into all this? She’s real, she’s green, and she’s extremely lucky.
Molly Fitzgerald’s superpower is luck, obviously. Her father was a militant Irish nationalist who brought his son up to the Northern Ireland mountainside to ask the gods to grant his son the power to defeat his enemies. This ‘power’ seemingly decided it would be better off in the hands of a flame-haired Irish cailín and descended on Molly instead. She’s literally one big lucky charm.
“Rather than return to the war-torn mountains, she used her “good luck powers” to become Ireland’s super heroine, Shamrock.”
She didn’t really, she thought about it but decided she’d rather become a teacher and save the world through the power of education. What a loser, she didn’t even do the lotto or buy a scratch card. She could have gotten in to politics and become president or end the Troubles in her “war-torn mountains”.
But that wasn’t the end of auld Molly Fitzgerald. After she wheeled her wheelbarrow through the streets of education, her own father drugged her and passed her on to Arnim Zola (an evil geneticist) in the hopes of duplicating her lucky powers so he could transfer them to himself. Molly was having none of it and her powers increased phenomenally so that she escaped and defeated Arnim Zola.
Mr.Fitzgerald wasn’t best pleased about this latest development and pulled a gun on his darling daughter. He obviously chose to ignore what just transpired. Molly’s powers saved her yet again and her father’s gun exploded in his hand, killing him. All Molly wanted was to be a first grade teacher, she never asked for this super lucky gift, and what does she get for saying ‘no’ to destroying the world? A face full of gun and a lifetime of daddy issues.
Remember that time when Shamrock killed the President of Ireland? No? That’s because at the first Pan-European Conference on Super-Human Affairs conference, Brain Drain ( a Nazi villain) tried to brainwash all the representatives in to killing their own presidents. Shamrock’s powers meant she wasn’t affected by the brain washing and therefore no Irish president was hurt. Huzzah!
Soon after this, Molly’s powers ran out when she broke her left foot, and as we all expected she lived out the rest of her life as the best hairdresser in the universe, flipping the bird to education, and tidying up Shadowcat and Wolfsbane’s split ends.
If Molly Fitzgerald has taught us anything it’s that you can get by in life on sheer luck and you should probably drop out from any sort of education and focus on weaves and hair dye instead.
