DCU Student’s Union have launched a respect campaign in response to complaints against student behaviour at the college’s late bar. Some students are turning over bins and causing noise disruption on the way to the campus every Tuesday night. Fights have also broken out at the weekly event named Toxic Tuesday. In an e-mail sent out to all students, DCU SU President Ed Leamy elaborated on the recent behaviour: ‘Local residents have reported damage to their cars and bins have been overturned regularly on the route to the college campus’ he wrote.

He explained how residents had become fearful of confronting DCU students. ‘There have been complaints of noise into the early hours of the morning and residents are fearful of what might happen if they confront students about their behaviour’. Extra security will be positioned between the Shanowen area and the Helix on the DCU campus.

‘The complaints were focused around the walkway from the Helix to the Shanowen area. The extra security and name change will be enforced indefinitely this semester’ said DCU SU Welfare Officer, Collie Ollie. Student’s were also warned in the e-mail what will now happen if they continue their disruptive behaviour. ‘From now on, any student behaving in an irresponsible manner, particularly towards local residents, may be summoned before the University Disciplinary Committee. This can lead to serious consequences.’

The news of DCU students disruption to local residences came within days of a video of Waterford IT students beginning riots in their local area.

Toxic Tuesday was renamed ‘Tuesday Nights’ in an attempt to turn around student’s behaviour.

Do  you think the name change and extra security in DCU will stop the disruption? Have you witnessed any fights or violence at DCU’s Toxic Tuesdays?

Name change wont make a difference tbh, if students want to get drunk and make a nuisance of themselves then a name change wont make a difference. Extra security on the way back to shanowen etc is a good idea tho.

That video has made me feel ill. No student who acts in such a way – wasting the time of Gardaí and hence taxpayers money, has the right to protest for a free education.

It’s all greatly exaggerated, I’ve never seen any fights or trouble in Toxic. And regarding turned over bins and damaged cars, also never seen it. And while this article presents these as regular problems I’d speculate that they were very isolated incidents. The main problem here is noise to residents, which to be honest is extremely petty. Perhaps they should have thought twice before buying a house between a University and it’s primary accommodation. The whole ‘residents living is fear’ story that is put across here was clearly written by someone who has no idea what they’re talking about. And maybe next time show a video related to DCU, and don’t associate us with the negative behaviour of WIT students. Or maybe you couldn’t find any negative footage of the students here?

And for the record I study there, went to secondary school in the area and live locally.
